What is Parkinson's Disease? Treatment/Prognosis

Parkinson's disease is a neurological illness. It was named after Dr. James Parkinson a London physician who was first to describe this disease in 1817. PD is another name for Parkinson's disease.

Inheritance Pattern Incidence/Frequency

Studies have shown that PD may be more common in ethnic groups or in certain regions of the world. This disease occurs in older people over the age of 50. This disease is more common in men then it is women. If someone in your family has this disease it doesn't mean that you will have it, it just means your at risk of getting it.

Symptoms

The symptoms of Parkinson's disease are they tremble involuntary, they find that there muscles become rigid and stiff, they lose there ability to move quickly, they walk in a recognizable manner with a gait, they may have trouble keeping there balance, and they speak impairment.
Treatment/Prognosis
The Treatments/Prognosis of Parkinson's is to get put on medication, surgery, rehabilitation, clinical re-center search trials. This disease is manageable. There are support groups for Parkinson's. One of the support groups for this disease is APDA and they can be contacted at 1-800-223-2732.

Incidence/Frequency

Over one million people live with Parkinson's in the US and scientists believe only only 5% is inherited. Scientists also think that environment is a factor of Parkinson's disease.
